Other Functional Coating Applications with nHALO®



Beneq's Functional Coating System FCS 500 can be tuned for producing various functional coatings on various substrates. Possible applications include:
- antimicrobial coatings on steel,
- hydrophobic or hydrophilic coatings on steel, ceramics or glass
- antimicrobial and catalytic coatings on various filters

The coatings are formed by depositing functional nanosize metal oxide or noble metal particles on the surface of the substrate at elevated temperatures. The substrate has to tolerate elevated temperatures up to about 500 °C for limited periods of time. In practice the substrates can be glass, ceramics, and in some cases also steel and other metals.

The nanoparticles are generated by using patented nHALO® burner system. The produced nanoparticles are directly deposited on the substrate thus providing the surface with the desired coating and thereto related properties. The system produces nanoparticles typically in the range of 10 to 100 nm (10-9 m), with size ranges of 50 -100 nm for metal oxide particles and 10 to 50 nm for noble metal particles. The burner system is based on the combustion of gaseous and atomized liquid raw materials in a highly turbulent, atmospheric oxy-hydrogen flame (Hot Aerosol process). A great variety of raw materials can be used, e.g., metal nitrates, sulphates or alkoxides dissolved typically in alcohol or water. Rapid quenching and a short dwell time produce a narrow particle size distribution.

FCS 500 has been developed to meet the required industrial standards. The product structure is robust and modular for further extensions. Commercially available, industrially proven components and solutions are used to guarantee high quality, serviceability and high efficiency.
