Beneq is Winner of the 2011 Red Herring Top 100 Europe award
31 May 2011
Beneq has been chosen a Winner of Red Herring's Top 100 Europe prize, an award in recognition of the leading private companies from Europe, celebrating these startups’ innovations and technologies across their respective industries.
Red Herring’s Top 100 Europe list has become a mark of distinction for identifying promising new companies and entrepreneurs. Red Herring editors were among the first to recognize that companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, Skype, YouTube, and eBay would change the way we live and work.
“Choosing the companies with the strongest potential was by no means a small feat,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “After rigorous contemplation and discussion, we narrowed our list down from hundreds of candidates from across Europe to the Top 100 Winners. We believe Beneq embodies the vision, drive and innovation that define a successful entrepreneurial venture. Beneq should be proud of its accomplishment, as the competition was very strong. Mr Sampo Ahonen, Beneq CEO, comments: “To rise from Finalist to Winner in Red Herring’s challenge is an honor we acknowledge and value highly. My personal thanks for having achieved this award of recognition go to everyone at Beneq, our partners and our customers, all of which bear a critical role in building success and profit for our business.

Beneq is a Finalist for the 2011 Red Herring Top 100 Europe
11 May 2011
Beneq has been selected as a finalist for Red Herring's Top 100 Europe award, a prestigious list acknowledging the year’s most promising private technology ventures from the European business region.
The chosen finalists reflect the most innovative companies from a pool of hundreds from across Europe. The nominees are evaluated on several criteria, including financial performance, technology innovation, management skills, execution of strategy and integration into their respective industries. This assessment of potential is further complemented by a review of the actual track record and status of a company, which allows Red Herring to see past the “buzz” and make the list a credible instrument for discovering and advocating the greatest business opportunities in the industry.
"This year was very rewarding," said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. "The global economic situation has abated and there are many great companies producing really innovative and amazing products. We had a very difficult time narrowing the pool and selecting the finalists. Beneq shows great promise therefore deserves to be among the Finalists. Now we’re faced with the difficult task of selecting the Top 100 winners of Red Herring Europe. We know that the 2011 crop will grow into some amazing companies that are sure to make an impact."
Beneq CEO, Mr Sampo Ahonen, says: “This acknowledgement is very pleasing, as it further assures us at Beneq, our customers and owners alike, that our work is on a sound and credible basis, regardless of who is evaluating our business. We have unique skills within Beneq, and we are eager to put them to work and turn them into success.”

Beneq paving the way for sustainable energy solutions in India
13 April 2011
During a recent visit to Finland, Indian Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Mr Farooq Abdullah, met Finnish Minister of the Environment, Mrs Paula Lehtomäki, together with Cleantech Finland officials and member companies, including Beneq.
Minister Farooq Abdullah opened the meeting by emphasizing his interest in solutions that Cleantech Finland member companies have for the most important energy questions facing India. India's consumption of energy is today the fifth largest in the world, exceeding own production by 12.7%. Rapid domestic economic and population growth will keep the need for energy growing in the future, and so the challenge is how to increase both energy production and energy efficiency. Another major challenge is the restricted availability of electrical power; more than 400 million Indians have no access to electricity. The situation is most serious in scarcely populated areas. In addition, there are frequent interruptions in local electricity distribution, due to poor condition of the power grid.
Answering the call, Cleantech Finland member companies offered concrete solutions for India’s energy challenges. Mr Sampo Ahonen, CEO of Beneq, advocated solar energy as an energy source in areas where electricity is not available at all. In these areas, access to electricity during the daytime would already be a major improvement, and the solar radiation values in India are among the highest in the world. Beneq delivers coating equipment for improving the efficiency of photovoltaic cells.
According to Mr Matti Rae, Director of New Technologies at Ensto, the solution to electricity distribution reliability and electric network functionality is Ensto’s smart grid expertise.
Mrs Maria Paatero-Kaarnakari from Fortum presented a combined energy and heat production solution and a charging point network for electric cars, which Fortum has implemented in co-operation with the City of Espoo and Ensto.
Vacon CEO Mr Vesa Laisi presented the company’s innovations for energy efficiency – a frequency transformer that controls electric motor operation and reduces energy consumption by an average of 10%.
Summing up the gist of the meeting was Mr Santtu Hulkkonen, Cleantech Finland Program Director: ”India, its rapidly growing industry and need for energy, and its interest in renewable energy, represents huge market potential for Finnish cleantech companies, and there is a lot of need for Finnish cleantech expertise. Cleantech Finland (which arranged the meeting with Minister Abdullah) assists Finnish environmentally aware technology companies to market and communicate their competence in India”.

Beneq and Glaston announce first TCO line sale
22 March 2011
The first Beneq-Glaston TFC2000™ line for manufacturing TCO coatings on glass for photovoltaics (PV) has been sold to Asia. The total order is approximately EUR 14 million, of which Glaston’s share is over EUR 4 million. The line delivery is scheduled for Q1 of 2012.
Beneq CEO, Mr Sampo Ahonen, comments: “This is a definitive demonstration of the growing need for high-quality TCO-glass and coating equipment to manufacture it. It is also good proof of the seamless cooperation between Beneq and Glaston, which with this transaction has taken a giant leap forward.”
In September 2010, Beneq and Glaston announced their strategic cooperation for solar glass coating equipment. Results of the collaboration between the companies brought about the new TFC2000™ continuous offline production concept, which enables a commercially affordable way to manufacture high-quality TCO coated glass for the solar industry. The Beneq coating system, featuring unique and proprietary nAERO® technology, is fully integrated into Glaston’s CHF Pro™ heat treatment line. The TFC2000™ combines world-leading glass and annealing technology with advanced thin film coating for rapidly growing solar applications.”
“The sale of the first TFC2000™ line in such a relatively short period of time is very encouraging and confirms that the joint Beneq-Glaston offering has been well positioned to serve the needs of the growing thin film PV industry with a solution that is unique and competitive”, Glaston CEO Mr Arto Metsänen comments.
